Choice & Control, Safeguarding Autonomy

We recognise that upholding supported accommodation rights goes beyond providing a safe place to live. It's about respecting autonomy and ensuring everyone is treated with dignity and respect in mental health care.

Residents at Shenehom Housing Association are empowered to:

  • Make decisions about their daily routines, whether it's when they wake up, how they spend free time, or what leisure activities they enjoy.
  • Choose their own meals, take part in menu planning, and share preferences about food and nutrition.
  • Express their style by selecting clothing and personal items, promoting individuality and comfort.
  • Manage their lifestyle preferences, from faith practices to hobbies and social interactions.

Residents are trusted to manage:

  • Their own money, including day-to-day expenses and benefits, with guidance provided if required.
  • Their medication independently, unless support is specifically requested for peace of mind.
  • All decisions are transparent and inclusive, protecting equality and inclusion in supported housing.

Wherever a resident seeks or requires additional input, our team is on hand with advocacy in mental health services, ensuring that choices remain in the resident's control and their dignity remains safeguarded.

Independence for Mental Health Residents

Personal empowerment is central to our ethos at Shenehom Housing Association, so we provide a home environment that feels genuinely independent and family-like. Our rights-based and dignity-led approach means residents always have:

  • Their own front door key for privacy and autonomy, reinforcing residents' rights in supported housing.
  • Complete freedom to come and go, encouraging participation in daily life and the wider community.
  • Access to support for transport requirements, whether for personal outings, work, or connecting with loved ones.

  • Assistance when needed for attending appointments, including health, social and community engagements.
  • Support to visit family and friends, helping to sustain important relationships and social connections.
  • Encouragement to join inclusive community activities, group events, and wellbeing initiatives: nothing is imposed, but everyone is invited.

We believe a home should empower everyone to reach their goals, offering advocacy where needed and safeguarding residents' mental health while encouraging meaningful independence.
